Outreach

I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of scientists through outreach!

Girl's day at the museum

I designed an activity about food neophobia - a reluctance to try new foods - which is measurable in animals and humans. Girls grade 4-6 learned about experimental design, data collection and analysis, all while testing their own food neophobia. Suprisingly, 6th grade girls were the most food neophobic!

Food neophobia in first graders

This activity was adapted from Girl's Day at the Museum. A first grade class from Buchanan Elementary School learned about food neophobia in house sparrows and humans, tried novel fruits and vegetables in a group and solo setting, and made a bar graph of their results. Being in a group overall made the first graders less neophobic, or more likely to try new foods!

Mono lake committee outdoor experiences program

I lead an activity about radio telemetry to expose youth from Los Angeles to field research techniques. We also taught students about avian stress physiology and climate change.
